This is not a research project !
What is a Research Infrastructure (RI) ?
This is NOT a research project!
It is a permanent information structure offering users (scientific communities and other R&D&I stakeholders) open access to a range of high-quality federated resources and services provided by the partners (biological, experimental and analytical resources, academic and professional training, etc.). In this way, it encourages, at national and international level, interdisciplinary collaboration for excellent research and innovation within the framework of research projects, networks or working groups.
ESFRI definition (EU regulation 1291/2013 - Article 2(6)):
RI are facilities, resources and services that are used by the research communities to conduct research and foster innovation in their fields. They include: major scientific equipment (or sets of instruments), knowledge-based resources such as collections, archives and scientific data, e-infrastructures, such as data and computing systems and communication networks and any other tools that are essential to achieve excellence in research and innovation.
RI are implemented along different organisational models:
- central sources and laboratories for experiments and measurement sessions
- coordination & management of:
- Geographically distributed observatories or laboratories
- Remotely accessible resources for computing
- Data banks
- Physical sample repositories
- Surveys and longitudinal studies
And what about Distributed RI ?
This is NOT a coordinated research network (= collaboration of fully independent RPOs)
It is a structure of distributed resources consisting of a Central and several thematic Hubs, interlinked with National Nodes, whose can be further coordinating local nodes.
A distributed RI needs to be identified by a unique name, legal status and governance structure
